The Joe Dunphy Custom Woodworking Story
Following in the work boot treaded footsteps of four generations before him, Joe Dunphy started a woodworking business with his wife, Lisa, in 1988. From a modest workshop next to their Morell, PEI, home, Joe and one additional employee built high quality kitchens and bathrooms to order.
Joe’s reputation for doing top-notch work at a fair price started to spread. He and his employee outgrew the workshop almost immediately. As the business kept growing, more space was needed to fit the additional employees. There have been three physical additions to the business since then.
Custom Built Cabinetry
Throughout these growth phases, the type of woodworking Joe was doing also changed. The product Joe produced went from being utilitarian in nature to custom woodworking. Joe and his growing team developed an efficient production process that would allow them to build custom kitchens and bath cabinetry to fit any budget.
Beautifully detailed cabinetry was coming out of the shop, designed either by Joe or based on photos and plans brought in by clients.
Then, on January 25, 2013, the Dunphys’ woodworking shop burned to the ground. Nothing was salvaged. All equipment, stock, and work in progress was lost.
But, the business quickly rose from the ashes. With the help of a dedicated staff and the kindness of competitors and neighbours, production started again one week later, while work also started on construction of a new workshop.
Today, seven full-time, year-round employees work for Joe Dunphy Custom Woodworking in addition to Lisa (who works as the company bookkeeper) and Joe. The couple’s son, Michael, is the team’s architectural technician.
